Kullu Dussehra

Celebrated in the beautiful Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, Kullu Dussehra is a spectacular festival of devotion, culture, and tradition. Unlike the rest of India, where Dussehra marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, Kullu Dussehra begins on Vijayadashami and continues for seven days. The festival brings together hundreds of village deities, beautifully decorated palanquins, and thousands of devotees who gather at Dhalpur Maidan to honour Lord Raghunath. The vibrant processions, traditional music, colourful attire, and majestic Himalayan backdrop create an unforgettable cultural experience.

Kullu Dussehra is an awesome festival for photography because it transforms the valley into a vibrant celebration of color, culture, and devotion. Held in the beautiful town of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh, the festival begins after Dussehra celebrations have ended elsewhere, bringing together local communities and visitors for several joyful days. Photographers can capture the grand procession of Lord Raghunath’s chariot, pulled through the streets by devoted people, while traditional music and dancing create lively scenes all around. Hundreds of beautifully decorated village deities arrive in palanquins, dressed in bright fabrics and sparkling ornaments, offering wonderful opportunities for colorful portraits and detailed close-ups.

The surrounding Himalayan landscape adds a stunning natural backdrop, especially when the autumn light falls across the mountains and Beas River. Markets, traditional clothes, handicrafts, food stalls, and smiling faces provide countless candid moments that show the festival’s welcoming spirit. Early morning light is ideal for photographing the deities and quiet streets, while evening brings dramatic scenes as crowds gather and the celebration glows beneath the lights. Visitors should be respectful when photographing worshippers and religious rituals, and it is best to ask permission before taking close-up portraits. A camera with a versatile lens can help capture both sweeping views and intimate details, while a phone can be just as useful for spontaneous moments. Kullu Dussehra is more than a beautiful event; it is a living expression of faith and community. For photographers, every procession, pattern, and joyful expression tells a story, making the festival an unforgettable place to create vivid and meaningful photographs.

Held in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, the celebration begins after Dussehra is over in much of India, bringing together local communities, musicians, and hundreds of decorated deities carried in traditional palanquins. For photographers, the lively processions create countless moments to capture: embroidered garments, intricate ornaments, rhythmic dancing, expressive faces, and the bright standards waving above the crowds. The warm glow of the evening lights adds atmosphere, while the surrounding mountains provide a dramatic natural backdrop. Wide-angle photographs can show the scale of the gathering and the valley setting; close-up portraits can reveal the care and devotion behind each detail.

Candid images of people sharing smiles, conversations, and festive food help tell a more personal story of the celebration. Changing light throughout the day offers different possibilities, from soft morning scenes to energetic, colorful evenings. Respectful photography is important: ask permission before taking close portraits, avoid blocking processions, and follow local guidance around sacred rituals. A comfortable camera strap, extra batteries, and a versatile lens can make it easier to explore the crowded grounds. Most of all, take time to experience the festival rather than viewing everything through a lens. With thoughtful timing and a curious eye, Kullu Dussehra can inspire photographs that capture not only its striking visuals but also its warmth, devotion, and sense of community. It is a memorable destination for anyone who loves travel photography and wants to document a living cultural tradition. Do join our photowalks and experuence this festival through a lens.
